Basic Techniques of Manual Lymph Drainage (Vodder Technique)

Recognizing the need to support trained lymphedema therapists in reviewing the essential techniques of Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD), the Academy of Lymphatic Studies has prepared this visual aid to guide therapists through the correct hand positions of the four basic strokes of MLD in relation to the lymph collectors. This DVD serves to reinforce the goals and correct use of the techniques known as the Stationary Circle, Pump, Scoop and Rotary techniques, discusses the effects of MLD techniques on the soft tissues and lymphatic structures, and reinforces the correct pressures with which these techniques are applied. The appropriate working and resting phase of each MLD technique is highlighted and strokes are demonstrated stationary and dynamically, one-handed and bimanually.

WARNING: Improper application of Manual Lymph Drainage can be harmful to the patient. The purpose of this demonstration is to review the appropriate techniques of the four basic strokes of MLD for properly trained therapists.  These videos are not intended to teach Manual Lymph Drainage to untrained individuals.

• Demonstration of the Thumb Circle, one-handed and bimanually
• Demonstration of the Pump stroke, one-handed and bimanually
• Demonstration of the Stationary Circle in combination with the Pump stroke – “Pump-Push”
• Demonstration of the Scoop stroke, one-handed and bimanually
• Demonstration of the Scoop stroke in combination with the Pump stroke
• Demonstration of the Rotary stroke, one-handed and bimanually
• Demonstration of the Rotary stroke in combination with bimanual Stationary Circles – “Technique of Seven”
